…The north heaps up the lofty clouds, It blows, it howls ― then in a trice Enchantress winter brings snow and ice. Winter: it spreads, and snowy scarves It hangs on the branches of the oaks; It lies like carpets in smooth waves Amidst the fields, on the hills’ slopes. Of the motionless still stream the banks Are levelled and covered with fluffy down; The frost twinkles, and we all give thanks, And welcome mother winter’s pranks.

When winter arrives with its bitter frosts, the windows of our homes are painted with magical patterns. The delicate, enchanting designs on the glass appear to be hand-drawn. Since childhood, we have believed that at night, when we are all asleep, Father Frost decorates our windows with his magic staff. And even if it is just a fairy tale, it always warms our hearts. The magical winter patterns on the windows are surprisingly similar to delicate weaving made of the finest threads. And as we gaze at the patterns, strange visions appear before us: bizarre branches and flowers, fairy-tale animals, the outlines and shapes of fairy-tale castles, the feathers of exotic birds, transparent snowflake stars, the finest geometric ornamentation — frost patterns are diverse and unique. The drawings of these fairy-tale winter patterns are not only unique, but also one of a kind. And the magical artist creates more and more new pictures. The winter patterns on the windows are mesmerising and striking in their beauty, and looking at them makes you want to marvel and believe in miracles! It also makes you want to capture them on canvas…

‘Troeruchitsa’ is a miraculous icon of the Mother of God, revered in Orthodox Christianity, distinguished by the depiction of a third hand. She is considered a patroness who protects against misfortune. The icon belongs to the Virgin Hodegetria (One of the major types of the Madonna in Byzantine art showing a standing Virgin holding the Child on her left arm) type, the prototype of which is located in the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos. In the 9th century, during the iconoclastic period, the Reverend John of Damascus († c. 780; commemorated on 4 December) was slandered by Emperor Leo III Isaurian (717–740) before the Caliph of Damascus for treason because of his zealous veneration of holy icons. The Caliph ordered the saint’s hand to be cut off and hung in the market. In the evening, St. John asked the Caliph for his severed hand, applied it to the joint, and fell prostrate before the icon of the Mother of God. The saint asked the Mother of God to heal the hand that had written in defence of Orthodoxy. After a long prayer, he fell asleep and saw in a dream that the Most Holy Mother was speaking to him, promising a speedy recovery. At the same time, the Mother of God ordered him to work diligently with this hand. When he awoke from his sleep, the reverend John saw that his hand was unharmed. In gratitude for his healing, the saint placed a silver hand on the icon, which then became part of the iconography, which is why the icon was named ‘Troeruchitsa’ (Three-Handed). The Troeruchitsa icon is one of the most revered shrines in the Orthodox world.

On 29 January, a new art exhibition opened at the House of the Warrior in Lviv, featuring works from the Armigera Art space. This exhibition is about beauty, tranquillity, and the inner strength that art provides even in difficult times. This time, viewers were presented with two exhibitions at once: ‘Paper World’ — works on paper that reveal the beauty of simple materials and subtle sensations. Watercolours, pencils, gouache, mixed techniques — all about the fragility and, at the same time, the power of art. The winter exhibition — canvases painted in oil and acrylic. These are winter landscapes and moods that remind us that winter can be not only cold, but also bright, cosy and inspiring. The exhibition features works by Ukrainian artists from different regions of Ukraine, as well as artists who are currently abroad due to the war. The Armigera Art space has been supporting Ukrainian artists for over three years, combining art with charity. We invite you to visit the exhibition at the House of the Warrior. The exhibition curator is Zoriana Pavlyshyn. The art space is Armigera Art.
This is the Red or Virginia Cardinal. For modern Americans, this crested red bird is an integral part of Christmas, and it has been chosen as the official symbol of seven states (Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and North Carolina). Native Americans made the cardinal the hero of their fairy tales. Some tribes believed that the wolf gave the bird its bright, distinctive colouring in gratitude for saving its sight. The Cherokee believed that the red bird was the child of the Sun. In the Christian context, both the blood of Jesus and cardinals are used as symbols of life force, and this life force is eternal. Scripture clearly states: ‘By his blood we are freed from sin, so that we may serve the living God, glorify Him and rejoice in Him forever.’ Therefore, red cardinals represent life, hope and restoration in Christianity. Nowadays, these birds are depicted on postcards, tableware and household items. They are a true symbol of family happiness, comfort and steadfastness. After all, these small, lively cardinals do not leave their native places even in winter, and even in the cold season they stay together as a pair. Their songs are a set of very beautiful, ringing trills, vaguely reminiscent of the song of a nightingale, for which they are often called the Virginia nightingale.

The romance of Paris is a combination of places filled with a special magnetism in this unique city, such as the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre and the bridges of the Seine, with cosy cafés, street artists and an artistic atmosphere, where lovers stroll through narrow streets, drink hot chocolate at Angel or watch the sunset from the Île de la Cité. Such places attract not only artists and lovers. Anyone who visits Paris is imbued with the special, romantic atmosphere of this city, whose main symbols, the Wall of Love, Pont des Arts, walks along the Seine, complemented by the atmosphere of the artists of Montmartre and the mysterious mass of the legendary Notre-Dame de Paris, reinforce the romantic influence of the city, which, according to Balzac, has no equal in the Universe.
