I wasn’t trying to imitate Van Gogh at all. I just love sunflowers so much. Every flower is like a little sun. I tried to capture the radiance of these suns in the painting.

Princess Olga ascended the throne after the death of Prince Igor Rurikovich and was the de facto ruler of Kievan Rus’ from 944 to 964. Olga is immortalised not only in the history of Ukraine and the world, but also in a monument erected in her honour in 1911 on St. Michael’s Square in Kyiv, sculpted by I. Kavaleridze and P. Snitkin. A wise, far-sighted, fearless, decisive, invincible ruler according to the chronicle, she was canonised as an equal to the apostles by the Orthodox Church for accepting and spreading Christianity and building churches… The beginning of 2022, the Russian invasion, did Olga prevent the occupiers from breaking through to Kyiv? Surrounded by sandbags, the pedestal is ready to withstand a siege in the very heart of the capital, where on 21 May 2022 an exhibition of equipment destroyed in fierce battles on the approaches to the capital opened. What is this? A symbolic coincidence or a new legend about a powerful ruler who once avenged her husband’s death?

The Firebird is a character from the Slavic epic, an incarnation of the god of the sun and thunderstorm. Its radiance blinds the eyes like the sun or lightning. The Firebird is followed by fairy-tale good men, and to the one who masters at least one of its feathers comes great happiness. The bird lives in another world — the Thirtieth Kingdom, in the paradise garden of Iria, and is connected with the netherworld. The Firebird shines brightly, emitting red, orange and yellow light like a bonfire. She eats golden apples, which give eternal youth, beauty and immortality, and drinks water from living springs. And when she sings, she cures diseases and heals the blind. From its open beak the sounds of thunder roll out and brilliant sparks of lightning scatter. Sometimes you can find a feather that has fallen out of the Firebird’s tail. Taken into a dark room, it will replace the strongest lighting. It is impossible to catch the bird with bare hands — you can get burned or burnt. In Slavic folklore, it is both a blessing and a messenger of doom for its captor. The feather that has fallen out can retain the properties of the feather plumage of the Firebird for a long time. It glows and gives warmth. And when the feather is extinguished, it turns into gold. At night, the Firebird flies around the garden, burning like a flame; if she flies somewhere, everything around her lights up at once. One feather of hers is worth more than the whole kingdom, and the Firebird herself has no price at all. The Firebird dies every autumn and is reborn in spring.

A red scarf, preserving family memories, adorns the head of a daughter at a fashion show dedicated to Ukrainian Scarf Day at the Ukrainian National Clothing Festival in 2024. This day has become not only a symbol of the indestructibility of our traditions, but also a revival of the significance of the main symbol of femininity and a family heirloom. I inherited this scarf from my grandmother. It not only keeps you warm in the cold, but also heals all ailments. Wrap yourself in it, and you feel like you are among the angels of childhood, safe and protected by many generations of ancestors. Now my daughter has chosen it from my wardrobe as the most fashionable and valuable item to emphasise her look. Since ancient times, scarves have accompanied women throughout their lives: christenings, weddings, even funerals. The scarf was passed down from mother to daughter, preserving family memory and protecting the family line.

I was shocked by the news. I tried to convey the horror of the war in this painting. I was only able to finish this painting a year and a half after the tragedy. It’s very hard morally to paint such a thing… A missile attack on an apartment building in Dnipro took place on 14 January 2023 at 15:30 local time. The attack was carried out by Russian troops during a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The missile strike destroyed part of an apartment block. As of 19 January, 46 dead, among them three children, and 75 wounded (among them 13 children) were known. On 17 January at 13:00, the search and rescue operation was completed at 13:00, the Russian attack killed 44 people, in the evening it was announced a total of 45 dead. Thus, the rescue operation lasted 69 hours. A total of 39 people (including 6 children) were rescued, 79 wounded (among them 16 children), in hospitals at the time of completion of the operation were 28 victims (10 in serious condition). 45 people died (6 of them children, the youngest child was 11 months old). 236 flats were destroyed, more than 400 people were left without housing. As of 10:40 on 19 January, police had received 420 reports of damaged property, 43 of damaged cars and 10 of damaged buildings. Eleven people remain missing. From a physical point of view, an ornament is simply some kind of pattern that is aesthetically appealing. But this is only a superficial understanding. Such patterns are a more perfect language, in which you can talk not only with other people, but also with the Universe. The ornaments of Petrikovsky painting were used as amulets: it is not just a tradition, it is something that really works. With the help of ornament one can express the very language of Nature, which has never been hostile to people. And by using ornaments, you can attract divine forces for your defence. It was also found out that images and patterns of our ancestors are not just drawings — they are able to deliver information to the oldest part of the brain — the medulla oblongata, where the deepest codes of our memory are stored. Thus, Petrikovsky painting is able to have a profound positive effect on both the body and consciousness of a person. Ornaments reflect the impact of sound, and therefore such patterns themselves are also capable of structuring water and, therefore, directly influence human health, harmonise all its internal systems with nature. Thus, clothes, rushniki embroidered with sacral ornaments, can not only correct DNA failures, improve health, harmonise consciousness, but also at a deep level to establish harmony between people and nature. Petrikovsky painting’s ornaments are not just patterns, but sacral symbols, which are able to restore a person’s health, harmonise his consciousness, increase awareness and a sense of unity with the Universe.
