The Holy Martyr and Healer Panteleimon was born in Nicomedia in the family of the noble pagan Eustorgius and the Christian Eubula. His name was Pantoleon (translated as “lion-like”), and his parents wanted to see him as a courageous and fearless young man. He attended a pagan school and studied medical skills with the famous doctor Euphrosinos. Endowed with many talents, very good-looking, he became close to the Emperor Maximian, who ordered that Pantoleon becomes his court doctor. At the same time, Pantoleon gets acquainted with Christians Hermolaus, Hermippus and Hermocrates. Hermolaus taught him Christian faith. And, in the name of the Lord, Pantoleon created the first miracle – reviving the dead boy from the bite of the echidna. After that miracle Pantoleon was baptized by Hermolay. Famous as a good doctor, he treats the seriously ill, heals the infirm, helps the needy for free. Seeing the good deeds of the son in the name of Christ, Pantoleon’s father was also baptized as Eustorgius. Maximian, having learned from the denunciation of the envious physicians about his faith, demanded from Pantoleon to deny it. But, having received a firm refusal, he exposed the young man to terrible tortures. During the ordeal, Christ appeared to him and gave him the name Panteleimon, which means “all-merciful.” Maximian, without reaching Panteleimon’s renunciation, ordered to execute him with a sword. After his death, great miracles of healing took place at the funeral and parts of the relics of the saint dispersed as the largest shrine all over the world. The cult of St. Panteleimon spread throughout the Christian world. Churches dedicated to the saint have already appeared in the 4th century, his paintings became popular in murals and icon painting. In the Orthodox icon tradition, Panteleimon is depicted in the image of a beardless young man, with curly hair in a dark-colored coat with gold sleevelets and collar, with a cloak on his shoulders. With a cross in his hand or with a medicine casket and measuring spoon. He is considered to be the patron saint of doctors, warriors, and is being treated by healing patients. And today, physicians seek for the help of a heavenly helper in such difficult and noble work. The original image is an icon of St. Panteleimon with a hagiography, Sinai, early XIII century (the only hagiographic icon of St. Panteleimon of Byzantine times). The picture is decorated with gold potale and rhinestones.

Saint Nicholas of Myra also known as Nicholas of Bari, was an early Christian bishop of Greek descent from the maritime city of Patara in Anatolia (in modern-day Antalya Province, Turkey) during the time of the Roman Empire. Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker. Saint Nicholas in the East is the patron saint of travellers, prisoners and orphans, in the West — the patron saint of almost all strata of society, but mainly children. His legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the folklore of Santa Claus («Saint Nick») through Sinterklaas. The original image is a fresco in St Sophia Cathedral in Kiev. Painting decorated with a dutch gold.

Sergius of Radonezh — Abbot of Radonezh, Miracle Worker of all Russia, Teacher of the Faith was a spiritual leader and monastic reformer of medieval Russia. Together with Seraphim of Sarov, he is one of Eastern Orthodoxy’s most highly venerated saints in Russia.

The Virgin of Vladimir, also known as Vladimir Mother of God, Our Lady of Vladimir, the earliest known surviving icon and one of the most honoured miracle-working icons of the Russian Orthodox Church. According to the 15th century legend (in the lists of the ‘Tale of Temir-Aksak’), the icon was painted by the Evangelist Luke. According to the legend, the icon has got to Constantinople from Jerusalem in V century at emperor Theodosius II. To Russia the icon has got from Byzantium about 1130 as a gift to sacred Kiev prince Mstislav Vladimirovich. The icon was delivered by the Greek Metropolitan Michael, who arrived in Kiev from Constantinople in 1130. At first the icon was in the convent of the Virgin Mary of Vyshgorod, the appanage town of Andrei Bogolyubsky, not far from Kiev. Andrei Bogolyubsky took the icon from Vyshgorod and placed it in his church of the Holy Virgin in Vladimir. Since then, the icon has received its present name — Vladimirskaya. According to tradition, dating back to the XVI century, Russian sovereigns were crowned at the Virgin of Vladimir Icon. As the main Russian shrine, the icon participated in the election of metropolitans and patriarchs. Since December 1999, the Virgin of Vladimir Icon has been kept in the Church-Museum of St Nicholas in Tolmachy at the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

The icon of the Apostle Peter depicts the image of the great martyr and Christian who first glorified the Lord Jesus Christ. I was finishing this painting in the art workshop of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra 10 hours before the beginning of the war.

It’s not ‘just a lot of water’ — it’s really a lot of water, a whole full-flowing river, wide and powerful, with clear blue water, framed by rocky banks with dense vegetation, then falling down a horseshoe-shaped precipice with a powerful waterfall, showing the majestic power of the water element. I was enraptured and so were my children. This trip will be remembered for a lifetime.

It’s a pity that it’s impossible to convey the smells in a painting. The smell of the forest, the smell of oaks cannot be compared to anything else. But I tried to convey the crystal clarity of the air with a light haze in the distance.
