Cappadocia. Winter landscape. A mesmerising view from a bird’s-eye…

In this painting, I have sought to capture the mesmerising beauty of Cappadocia in winter, blending my own sense of wonder with the grandeur and solemnity of the natural formations. Hot-air balloons floating above the fairy-tale ‘magical chimneys’ create a sense of lightness and freedom, contrasting with the rugged, stony magnificence of the landscape. Feelings of tranquillity and, at the same time, admiration for this ancient land and its heavenly backdrop, revealed from a bird’s-eye view, awaken an interest in the history and mysteries of this wonderful region.
Cappadocia is a unique historical region in Turkey, known for its ‘alien’ volcanic landscapes, ancient underground cities and rock houses where early Christians lived, as well as hot air balloon flights. It is a world-famous tourist destination, offering visitors cave hotels, rock monasteries, and the famous ‘fairy chimneys.’ And, of course, hot air balloon flights at dawn. Cappadocia is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

…The north heaps up the lofty clouds,
It blows, it howls ― then in a trice
Enchantress winter brings snow and ice.
Winter: it spreads, and snowy scarves
It hangs on the branches of the oaks;
It lies like carpets in smooth waves
Amidst the fields, on the hills’ slopes.
Of the motionless still stream the banks
Are levelled and covered with fluffy down;
The frost twinkles, and we all give thanks,
And welcome mother winter’s pranks.

Princess Olga – the fourth revenge

Princess Olga is a legendary woman who embodies the courage and resilience of Ukrainian women. After the death of her husband, Prince Igor, she had the strength and courage not only to raise her son, but also to take ruthless revenge for her husband’s death. The princess’s sharp mind repeatedly found the most ingenious solutions to the most critical situations of those times. According to historical records, the princess’s revenge on the Drevlyans was repeated, which clearly reflects her temperament.
The first time, when after Igor’s death it was decided to marry Olga to the Drevlyan prince Mal, 20 of the ‘best men’ were sent to her, and the princess ordered them to be buried alive.
The second time, Olga herself asked for the best men to be sent to her, and when the envoys arrived, they were burned in a bathhouse.
The third time, using an ancient ritual called a trisna, Olga ordered the drunken Drevlyans to be killed.
The fourth act of revenge took place after a year-long siege of the city of Iskoroten. Through her envoys, Olga asked for three pigeons and three sparrows from each household under the pretext of a light tribute and that the revenge was supposedly over. The Drevlyans agreed, and on the princess’s orders, they tied tinder to each bird, which they set alight when it got dark and released the birds.
Thus, Iskoroten burned down, and Olga avenged the death of her husband Igor.

Visiting the Boiki

Walking through Shevchenko Park, you can immerse yourself in the life of the mountainous regions of Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia region, which are ethnologically known as Boikivshchyna. According to the most common version, ‘boiki’ comes from the name of the Celtic tribe of Boii. Some consider them to be descendants of the White Croats, who participated in the formation of the Ukrainian people about a thousand years ago.
Boykivshchyna is famous for its wooden buildings, in particular single-storey rectangular houses with a special architectural design and layout, featuring galleries on one or more sides.
The huts of Boikivshchyna are of considerable cultural value and are part of the region’s cultural heritage, both in terms of architectural composition and log construction skills. Using only axes, the folk craftsmen of the Carpathians built huts with galleries, water mills, churches and bell towers, which we now appreciate as masterpieces of folk architecture. The massive shape of the building’s roof is particularly impressive, often resembling a mountain with its repeating contours.
Boiko buildings are ancient Carpathian estates consisting of farm buildings and stables separated by a ‘boishche’ (barn), and there is also an unusually decorated well. All buildings are carved.
The Boiko family wears traditional Carpathian clothing, which is comfortable, light, richly ornamented and elaborately crafted. The girls wear embroidered shirts, white skirts with embroidered edges and aprons, whose ornamentation resembles that of a rushnyk; they also wear headscarves. Married women knit scarves for their headdresses.

Kostełik (A small cathedral)

The painting depicts one of the unique temple structures in Ukraine.
The church from the village of Yazlivchik, Zolochivsky District, Lvov Region, built in 1936, has no name. The wooden structure on a high concrete base with a steep shingle roof is a unique example of the use of modernism in sacred architecture. A miniature hipped tower, rebuilt after destruction, with a wrought-iron cross is located above the square base of the entrance to the colourful building.
The church, or ‘kostełik’ (small cathedral), has no analogues either in Ukraine or abroad. The temple has preserved its original wooden altar in the form of a portal with Corinthian columns, crowned with an image of the ‘All-Seeing Eye of God’ in a sunbeam.
In 2013, the dilapidated and neglected temple was dismantled and moved to the Shevchenko Grove Museum of Folk Architecture and Life near Lvov. It was restored before being reassembled at the museum.

The palette of my inner world’s soul (ART Therapy)

The result of my participation in one of the master classes at the VI International Festival ‘ART Therapy. Healing and Resource,’ in which I took part.
The master class was called: The palette of my inner world’s soul.
The painting was created using a technique new to me, coffee painting, with the use of additional materials: red dry wine, grape juice, and saffron.

Niagara Falls. The rainbow colours of a natural wonder

In this painting, I tried to convey the power of nature through an expressionist-style depiction of a waterfall. Bright, contrasting colours create a sense of dynamic water flow crashing onto rocks, filling the space with energy and power. The image conveys a sense of lively movement and emotional tension, reflecting my impressions after visiting the famous waterfall. The painting invites the viewer to immerse themselves in the world of nature, full of power, beauty and constant movement.

I started this painting in August 2024, immediately after visiting Niagara Falls. But circumstances forced me to leave and leave the painting in the United States. Almost a year later, I was able to finish it. I relived the impressions of this magnificent sight and tried to transfer these impressions onto the canvas. I think it turned out quite well.

I painted this picture a week after the war started. At that time we were even in the sky trying to see some kind of clue. After painting this picture, I came up with the idea to create a collection of ‘Heavenly Signs’, which depicts the consciousness’ perception of the surrounding world in a critical situation

Niagara river. The great power of water

It’s not ‘just a lot of water’ — it’s really a lot of water, an entire full-flowing river, wide and powerful, with clear blue water, framed by rocky steep high banks with periodically dense vegetation, then falling down a horseshoe-shaped cliff with a powerful waterfall, demonstrating the majestic power of the water element. I was enthralled by the unforgettable sight. This journey will be remembered for a lifetime.
